Brief
Main Idea: Summer Camp Survival Guide
After reflecting, I would like to do my prokec sleep away camp may have more that I could do in terms of illustration and I think I can make it generally about the difficulties in trying to acclimate to a new environment. So many of the skills that I acquired at my camp got me though moving away from home, and were pretty seminal in helping me get use to an environment. I would like that to be a constant theme throughout my book.

Guiding Characteristics
Tone
- Like this to be a humorous book that people can laugh with but have moments that are more personal and helpful.
Audience
- I think that this book is for anyone going through a change of environment that is difficult for them. It will reference child-like subjects, however, they will be from the perspective of an adult, which will make them a bit more studied. Sleep away camp was my first introduction to being on my own and coping with being in a place I did not enjoy. But, since then, I have been in many situations like that and brought out the tools I’ve learned from that time.
Look & Feel
- I am thinking of doing a more retro look and feel - something that is reminiscent of “parent trap” summer camp vibes since I feel like that is a common mental model of what summer camp should be
- Size: I am thinking of a smaller size so that the person can keep on them and reference it throughout their time. I think there is this extremely vivid visual I have of
- Material: I really want the cover to be made out of canvas tent material, and I would like to have the cover be able to be removable and become a little tent for the person. Inside I might also think about having a little figure that is there for emotional support. They can set this up and feel less alone - I am not sure if it'll be the narrator or if it will be just a figure. I would like it to have a protective outer shell. The experience of being in an unfamiliar environment makes you very vulnerable.

Visual Inspirations:

I think a core component about my book will also be weaving together different messages. First and foremost is the directional part, but there is also a personal portion that I want to weave in. I always find that when I am going through a new experience, I like to know that someone knows that feeling. I think by weaving in personal anecdotes, or images of letters etc. I was really inspired by this 1960s guidebook for creating clothes, mostly in how they use notation. There are clear things that are emphasized and called out - almost like it has been pre-loved and someone jotted down their notes inside of it. I might want to incorporate this method into my visual system as a way to manage the different elements I want to encompass.
